Most garage door openers use a pair of photo-eye sensors mounted near the floor on each side of the track. One sensor sends an infrared beam and the other receives it; if the beam is broken, the door reverses for safety. Strong sunlight hitting the receiving sensor can mimic or mask that beam, confusing the system into thinking the path is blocked, or occasionally letting it ignore a real obstruction. This is more noticeable in seasons or times of day when the sun sits low on the horizon and shines directly into the garage opening.
Common Causes of Sunlight-Related Sensor Problems
Several conditions can make sensors more sensitive to sunlight, and identifying which one applies to your door helps narrow down the fix.
A garage facing east or west can catch low-angle sun directly on the receiving sensor's lens during certain hours, temporarily overpowering the infrared signal.
Light bouncing off a driveway, parked vehicle, or reflective siding can hit the sensor indirectly, causing the same interference even when the sun isn't shining straight in.
A dirty or hazy lens scatters incoming light differently than a clean one, which can make a sensor more prone to glare-related false readings.
If the sensors aren't pointed precisely at each other, even a small amount of stray light can tip a marginal signal into a failure, especially when combined with glare.
